This story must begin with an old Roland analog drum machine and a well used Juno synthesiser many a late evenings ago in the late 90s, before clubs and warehouse raves and second hand record stores, just a young man and his gear in a cool basement out in the fringes of Melbourne making up beats purely on instinct and hours of experiment.
Fast forward to now and you have the core essentials of what makes this multi-national artist tick. Benjamin Philippe Zulauf is no stranger to change and evolution, his own music career has seen him shift base from Melbourne to Lausanne, to Berlin and then Leeds, each change bringing in new scenes and sounds, all of which have found their way into his music. Hearing a DJ set from you will catch the influences of house, techno, deep house and electro, as well as acid, break beat and minimal. It is less about genre and more about direction, mood and the story you need to tell.
This is evident in his own music productions which have taken him to different destinations, from opening a Ministry of Sound in New Delhi to landing on a Perfecto mix CD, with the likes of Laurent Garnier, Peace Division, Josh Wink and Sasha finding a place for his earlier creations. With progression comes new ventures and new projects, in 2010 it was time to launch his own label Hummingbird by BPZ after having done A&R for various labels before. This would act as a platform for his own music and with a move to the centre of Techno that is Berlin, it was time to step up a gear and get in closer with the international scene.
Today you will find Benjamin in his current base of Leeds, still hard at work and pushing out new material. With his label now established and his latest music being being championed by the likes of LTJ Bukem, DJ Bone, Terry Francis, Barac, DJ Sprinkles, Âme and Maceo Plex, it is fair to say that he has earned his way over these years and that nothing comes without the hard work and endless dedication to that love of machine noise.
